Northwestern's 'And' Philosophy: Why Undecided Is Your Edge

Northwestern celebrates the 'and.' You're a writer AND an engineer? Perfect. That's exactly who they want.

Northwestern's 'And' Philosophy: Why Undecided Is Your Edge

MYTH-BUSTER
Northwestern

Northwestern has a specific phrase they use to describe what they are looking for: And is in our DNA. Most schools either ignore or tolerate students who don't fit into a single category. Northwestern actively seeks them. This is not marketing language — it reflects a genuine structural commitment built into the university's schools and programs.

What the And Philosophy Actually Means

The And philosophy means that Northwestern has deliberately built a university where crossing disciplinary boundaries is not just permitted but encouraged and structurally supported. A student who wants to study journalism and computer science doesn't have to choose — Northwestern's Medill and McCormick schools have joint pathways designed exactly for that student. A student who wants to study theater and economics doesn't have to explain that combination to a skeptical adviser — Northwestern has a culture that makes it feel natural.

The deeper belief behind this philosophy is that the most interesting and useful work happens at the intersection of disciplines — that the journalist who understands data science will ask better questions than the journalist who doesn't, that the engineer who has studied human psychology will design better systems than the engineer who hasn't, that the economist who has written fiction understands human motivation differently than the one who hasn't.

Why This Is Different From Other Schools

At most elite universities, interdisciplinary students face subtle resistance. Advisers encourage specialization. Academic departments are organized around disciplines that don't naturally talk to each other. Students who span multiple fields are often treated as undecided rather than innovative. This is not the case at Northwestern — the culture is explicitly designed to support students who refuse to choose a single lane.

Northwestern's quarter system (four quarters per year instead of two semesters) is part of this. The shorter quarters allow students to take a wider variety of courses without feeling like each one is a massive commitment. This is not accidental — it is designed to encourage exploration across disciplines in a way that semester-based systems make more difficult.

How to Show Your And in Your Application

The most effective Northwestern essay does not defend a single interest. It shows a genuine tension between two or more interests that the student has been navigating — and then explains why Northwestern's specific structure is the place where that tension becomes an advantage rather than a problem.

For example: a student who has been simultaneously pursuing competitive mathematics and creative writing does not need to explain which one she is 'really' about. At Northwestern, she can say: I want to use Weinberg's mathematics program for the analytical rigor I need, Medill's storytelling courses for the communication skills I need, and Northwestern's culture for the permission to hold both without apology. At most schools, I would need to choose. At Northwestern, I don't.

What If You Only Have One Main Interest

If you have a single dominant interest, the And philosophy can still be relevant. What does your core interest connect to? What adjacent fields would make your primary work stronger? A student who is primarily a musician can show how Northwestern's music school combined with Weinberg's neuroscience courses would let her study the neurological basis of musical experience in ways that would feed back into her composing.

The key is showing genuine curiosity across boundaries, not performing interdisciplinary interest you don't have. Northwestern will take a deeply focused student who shows genuine curiosity about how their focus connects to adjacent fields over a student who claims to have five equally passionate interests without depth in any of them.

What's Your 'And'?

Northwestern celebrates students who combine unexpected interests. Show how you'll use multiple schools.
